Jelínek Places Eighth in Parallel Giant Slalom

From January 26 to February 2, the Universiade, or World University Games, took place in Erzrum, Turkey. Albert Jelínek from Charles University competed in two races in the Palandöken mountain resort. He placed eighth in the parallel giant slalom and 18th in boardercross.

Charles University Rector Václav Hampl Hands Out Bolzano Awards

On February 24th, five Charles University students were awarded the annual Bolzano Awards for outstanding creative works in interdisciplinary research. “The decisive factor is the quality of the works and, for the most part, the recipients of the Bolzano Awards have been doctoral students, as is the case this year,” Charles University Rector, Professor Václav Hampl said at the 17th annual award ceremony.

The Mene Tekel International Project against Totalitarianism Kicks off in Prague

The exhibition titled “Reflection of Totalitarianism in Art and Education” opened by Charles University Rector, Professor Václav Hampl, in the Karolinum building on Monday, February 21st was the first of a series of events of the Mene Tekel international project against totalitarianism. Now in its 5th year, the project is organized by the Art Without Barriers civic association, the Confederation of Political Prisoners, Charles University, the City of Prague and the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes.

The 15th Annual Conference Two Days with Mathematic Didactics Concludes at the Charles University Faculty of Education

The Recipient of the Premio Iberoamericano Award: Our Hope is to Reconcile with the World

Out of 23 candidates, one of the main prizes of the 16th annual Premio Iberoamericano awards went to Eva Jandečková, a student of Spanish and French at the Charles University Faculty of Arts, for her thesis entitled “Ernesto Sábato: The Tunnel. The first and the other.“ It soon became evident that the meaning of the words “tunnel” and “the first and the other” are much more complex than they might seem.

Dictionary of Communism Now Available to the Public

The Dictionary of Communist Totalitarianism, published in late 2010, is the first attempt to map the language of the official communist propaganda. The dictionary was put together by the researchers at the Institute of the Czech National Corpus, a unique research group affiliated with the Charles University Faculty of Arts. We interviewed the director of the institute, Professor František Čermák.

Didactics is a Science in its Own Right. The First Edition of sciED Journal Has Been Published.

It might seem that the flood of newspapers, various magazines and scientific literature on the market leaves no room for new projects. Yet there are still topics that tend to be overlooked even though they have a large potential not only as to the size of their audience but also as to their genuine importance and long term contribution to a society depending on education. One such project on the scientific journal market is the electronic project sciED – Scientia in educatione. Its editor-in-chief, doc. RNDr. Naďa Stehlíková, Ph.D., head of the Department of Mathematics and Mathematic Didactics at the Faculty of Education of Charles University, describes the project.

Focus on the T-shirt: Faculty of Science’s Jan Kříž on the Faculty’s Photography Contest

16,000 CZK for a photo is not a bad deal. That is the prize money for the winners of the Faculty of Science’s photography contest, in which the focus is on the faculty T-shirt. Jan Kříž, student of cartography and geoinformatics and the 1st vice-chair of the Academic Senate of the Faculty of Science for the student chamber, gives the details about the contest and the faculty T-shirts.
