Nine new deans appointed by the Rector of Charles University
On Thursday January 28, 2010, nine candidates for deans elected by their respective academic senates received the decrees of appointment from the Rector of Charles University, prof. Václav Hampl. The new deans will assume office on February 1, 2010. Candidates for the post of the Candidates for the post of deans of a faculty are nominated by the members of the Academic Senate or at least fifty members of the academic community.

Charles University to hand out Bolzano Awards
It will be the sixteenth time Charles University has given the prestigious awards to its selected students for highly original works with excellent creative content and interdisciplinary dimension, written during their studies at the university. This year, six awards will be handed out in three categories: social sciences and humanities including theology, science, and medicine.

Václav Klaus, the president of the Czech Republic, appointed new rector
At the ceremony, Mr. Hampl said on the behalf of the newly appointed rectors: “Our society's expectations regarding higher education have not changed much since the late 1990's. The prevalent notion is that of a Master's programme graduate with a degree that pretty much guarantees a job and makes him an exceptional and invincible on the labour market. But it is no news to us that in real life, different schools are good at different things. What needs to be done now is to adjust conditions, legislation and funding to this reality. Without that, it would be very difficult to push for better quality of education under the pressure of increasing numbers of students.”

Outstanding graduates received Rector´s Awards
Rector of Charles University Václav Hampl awarded ten best graduates of Charles University with the annual Rector's Awards for outstanding achievements of degree students and student researchers. This year, six students received Rector's Award in four categories and four additional students received the Special Rector's Award. During the ceremony, Rector Hampl stated that “the Rector's Award is an acknowledgement of diligence, hard work and deep interest in the particular field. Today, I am happy to see graduates who have achieved so much in their research so early in their lives.”
