Cross-country skiing satisfies the competitive spirit as well as recreational athletes

The summer sports season is slowly but surely over. But don’t panic, you certainly don’t need to become a couch potato. There is plenty of choice in wintertime as well.  One such option is joining the cross-country skiing club, part of the Humanita Praha University Sports Club. Coach Eva Šeflová told us more.

Ice hockey battle Charles University vs. Czech Technical University

The much anticipated sporting event had finally arrived! On Wednesday, November 9th, the ice hockey teams of Charles University and the Czech Technical University played each other at the Tesla Arena in Prague’s Holešovice. Upon entering the grounds, it must have been clear to everyone that the battle was going to be tough. The stadium’s surroundings were crowded with hundreds of supporters dressed in the colours of their respective almae matres. Crowds of spectators hungry for a sports experience were streaming from the tram stops.

Prof. MUDr. Jiří Zeman, DrSc. from 1st Faculty of Medicine receives Education Minister’s Award

On November 10, Prof. MUDr. Jiří Zeman, DrSc., from the 1st Faculty of Medicine received the Award of the Minister of Education, Youth and Sport for outstanding results in research, experimental development and innovations for 2011. The ceremony was held in the Great Mirror Hall of the ministry building and the laudatory speech was given by the Prorector for Doctoral Programmes and Academic Qualifications Prof. PhDr. Ivan Jakubec, CSc. This year, the evaluation committee received 16 nominations and finally decided to award four honours.

Substance abuse prevention system still missing in schools

A conference was held on November 7 and 8 co-organized by the Centre for Addictology of the Psychiatric Clinic of the 1st Faculty of Medicine and the Charles University General Teaching Hospital, the capital Prague, and the SCAN Association, with the aim to answer the question as to whether we will finally be able to produce an interdisciplinary and inter-ministerial model of prevention in Czech schools. On the first day, all seats in the main hall in the Prague municipal authority building were occupied, proving that education and non-profit sector workers were really concerned with the issue of addictions.

Heptathlete Klučinová throws crutches away and looks forward to Olympics

For four years she suffered pain. In the last one she could hardly walk. Finally, the Czech heptathlon record holder Eliška Klučinová decided to undergo a risky surgery in June to have a malunion removed from her left foot. After a four-month recovery break she is training at full speed again to be able to make her dream come true and take part in the London Olympics next season. “I once again feel like training, maybe I will finally start enjoying it,” says the Faculty of Sport and Physical Education student who came seventh in the European Championships in Barcelona.

Centre for Experimental Plant Biology opens refurbished premises

The ceremonial opening of the newly refurbished premises of the Centre for Experimental Plant Biology of the Charles University Faculty of Science was held on October 27, 2011. The presentation of the research of the centre’s working groups and a tour of the refurbished rooms took place at the presence of the faculty’s Dean, Prof. RNDr. Bohuslav Gaš, CSc., vice-dean for the Biological Section and the Institute for Environmental Studies, doc. RNDr. Petr Folk, CSc., and representatives of the Prague City Hall.
