The President Appointed 14 New Charles University Professors
On April 30, 2010 in the Great Hall of Karolinum, the President of the Czech Republic Mr. Václav Klaus handed out 68 appointment decrees to new professors of institutions of higher education, 14 of them being from Charles University.

Faculty of Education Students Performed A Folk Play, For Credit
On April 20, 2010, students of Czech literature at the Charles University Faculty of Education gave the first (and so far also the last) performance of the Comedy About Felsenburk, The Mighty Knight in the arched cellar of the parish meeting room of the Church of Our Lady of the Snow in Prague. They did not rehearse the performance just for fun – by doing so, they also fulfilled the credit requirements for the seminar supervised by Miloš Sládek.

Portuguese President: “Your decision to study Portuguese was right and will prove fruitful”
The opportunity to meet and debate with students after the official programme is something that all statesmen and distinguished guests appreciate. The President of the Portuguese Republic J. E. prof. Dr. Aníbal Cavaco Silva showed that sentiment when he introduced his speech at the university by saying: “I will start speaking in English, but then I will continue in Portuguese, so that I can test the skills of students of Charles University in Portuguese.”

Charles University welcomes president of Portugal
On Friday, 16th of April 2010, the President of the Portuguese Republic, Aníbal Cavaco Silva together with his wife visited Charles University. The Portuguese President and the Rector of Charles University both had praise for the good relations and increasing student exchange between their countries. The visit culminated in a lecture given by the Portuguese President followed by a discussion with students.

Students of Medicine on a Mission to Kenya
Earlier this year, already the third group of students of the Charles University 1st Faculty of Medicine headed out to do their internships in Itibo, Kenya, accompanied by Dr. Jarmila Klieščiková from the 1st Faculty of Medicine's Department of Tropical Medicine, and Dr. Šárka Karlová, a stomatologist from Písek. In the course of the five-week stay, the students examined walk-in patients and took part in surgical procedures, as well as prenatal and postnatal care.

Impairment Will Not Slow Down Anna Kulíškova´s Life Between School and Ski Slopes
While many college students are busy enough studying, Anna Kulíšková wins medals on the side. She brought a bronze one from this year's Paralympics in Vancouver, and even a gold from Turin four years ago. On top of that, she has won Crystal Globes in both downhill and Super G.

To Build A Library: Introducing the Schumacher Cabinet of the Hussite Theological Faculty
“This is the place”, said the Dean of the Hussite Theological Faculty professor Jan B. Lášek and started a small informal meeting of the management of the faculty with the Rector of Charles University, professor Václav Hampl. The meeting took part in a work environment: while the officials discussed the library, librarians were in midst of entering thousands of books into the library's catalogue. The purpose of the meeting was to introduce a unique collection of over 6,000 books that will become the Schumacher Cabinet, bearing a name of the original owner and creator of this collection, professor Walter Schumacher from Freiburg im Breisgau.

It is strange to learn so much about French history in the Czech Republic
Annabelle Chiffre and Romain Mailho are two Erasmus students from the south of France, the Université Toulouse II - Le Mirail, who are studying at the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts at Charles University this year. They are part of a group of 25 Erasmus students at the university who have joined a complementary Erasmus programme called Europe Meets School (better known as Europa Macht Schule since the programme is originally German) in the 2009/10 academic year.

Students awarded for representing Charles University at Imagine Cup
They had 24 hours to program a robot and bring it to life. Their robotic sumo wrestlers placed among the six best robots at Imagine Cup, Luboš Perůtka's one winning the whole contest, while Imro Živčák's placing sixth. On April 7, 2010, both contestants, who were students of the Charles University Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at the time of the Cup, were awarded the Award for Representation by the rector of Charles University, Mr. Václav Hampl. This award is granted for achievements and activities that have contributed to the reputation of Charles University among general public.

Charles University celebrated its 662nd anniversary
On April 7, 2010, during a ceremonial plenary meeting, Charles University commemorated the 662nd anniversary of the foundation of the oldest Central European university. During the celebrations, the traditional Charles University's awards and medals were awarded, new members of the Rector's Collegium were introduced and professor Walter Pape received a doctorate honoris cause.

Professor Walter Pape awarded doctorate honoris causa from Charles University
On April 7, 2010, the leading European German philologist and literary scientist and professor of the University of Cologne, Walter Pape, received a Doctorate Honoris Causa of Philosophy. The university's promotor, prof. Zdeněk Beneš, awarded Walter Pape with the doctorate on the grounds of his contribution to the Czech-German relations in the fields of culture, science and education. The ceremony was a part of the celebrations of the 662nd anniversary of the foundation of Charles University.
