Legends of Czech Science Who Succeeded Against the Odds Remembered at the Anniversary Meeting

“We might be the best out of Czech homebodies, but we should be much better than this”, was one of the key ideas of Rector Václav Hampl’s speech at the ceremonial meeting celebrating Charles University’s 663rd anniversary on April 7. Charles University Rector meets students from Cheb secondary grammar school

Language is not only about correct spelling.

Fourteen university departments from eleven European countries have participated in the interdisciplinary “Sound To Sense” project, part of the Marie Curie Research Training Network financed by the European Union. The Czech partner in the project was the Institute of Phonetics at the Charles University Faculty of Arts. IForum discussed the project, which brings together linguistic phoneticians, engineers and psychologists, with its leaders, the director of the Institute of Phonetics doc. The 1st Mineral Resources for Society Student Conference Took Place at the Faculty of Science

The four day long “Mineral Resources for Society” conference, organized by the SGA Student Chapters group under the auspices of the Faculty of Science, took place on April 16-19. Attended by 40 mostly foreign students from Russia, Finland, Germany and Poland and 15 Czech students, its programme concluded with a tour of historical mining shafts in Příbram and Jáchymov.

April marks 92 years since František Lexa, a freshly appointed private assistant professor of Egyptology at Charles University, first stood before the students of the Faculty of Arts shortly after his 43rd birthday and launched Egyptology courses taught in the Czech language.

City of Hradec Králové Remembers Visit by President Edvard Beneš

The Hradec Králové Faculty of Medicine in collaboration with the Museum of East Bohemia have put together an exhibition documenting the visit of the President of Czechoslovakia Dr. Edvard Beneš and his wife to the city of Hradec Králové. President Beneš paid an unofficial visit to the faculty 65 years ago en route to the Čapek celebrations in the village of Malé Svatoňovice.
