The shockwave resulting from the gas explosion in Divadelní street on Monday 29 April damaged the premises of the CU Faculty of Social Sciences (known as the Hollar building) on Smetanovo nábřeží. “The building is still being guarded by the police, who are only letting us inside with police accompaniment. Repairs can only start when the police leave. We don’t yet know when that will be,” said PhDr. Jakub Končelík, Dean of the CU Faculty of Social Sciences, in an interview with student magazine iForum.

Hollar building hit by explosion. Rector expresses sympathy for wounded
The Rector of Charles University, Professor Václav Hampl, has expressed his support for all those injured following the gas explosion in Divadelní street, Prague, on Monday 29 April. The explosion damaged the premises of the CU Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS), known as the Hollar building.

Carolinum exhibition remembers Dean Aloys Klar’s care for the blind
The golden pen and hammer used by Emperor Franz Josef I in 1907 at the ceremonial start of building work on the new building of the Klar institute are amongst the exhibits on show at an exhibition being held to mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of the founder of care for the blind in Bohemia, Aloys Klar. The exhibition will be open until 31 May and entry is free.

Carolinum Open Day
This weekend the most ancient part of the oldest university in Central Europe was open to the public again for the first time in five years. The Carolinum, the central building of Charles University, has stood on the grounds since the fourteenth century. This weekend’s Open Day offered the chance for the general public to tour one of the most important buildings of Czech national and cultural history. Attracted to the day were people of all ages – despite the cold weather and lengthy queue!

Charles University Celebrated 665th Anniversary since its Foundation
In commemoration of the 665th year since its founding by King Charles IV in 1348, Charles University hosted a festive gathering in the Magna Aula of Karolinum on Wednesday, 3rd of April 2013.

Calendar - Women in History of Charles University
Charles University celebrates the year of the woman with the creation of a calendar honouring thirteen individuals who have contributed to the academic world and beyond. In 1890 the first Czech grammar school for girls, Minerva, was established by the librettist Eliška Krásnohorská, who commences the calendar year as the first female to receive an honorary doctorate of Charles University in 1922.

Historical Map Collection
After three years of closure, on the 22nd of March 2013, the extravagant Historical Map Collection at the Faculty of Science, Geographical Institute finally reopened its doors once again. This momentous event was met by a wonderful reception to unveil the grand display to invited guests. A large gathering attended, obviously knowing how important this event is to be commemorated which was dictated by various people who have made massive contributions to the collection such as Dr. Eva Novotná, the director of the collection.
