Doctors-to-be welcomed by cheerful labs rather than drab barracks in Motol

The new building housing the 2nd Faculty of Medicine’s theoretical institutes has been unveiled today by Charles University Rector Prof. Václav Hampl along with faculty Dean doc. Ondřej Hrušák. The ceremony included an unofficial opening of an exhibition of paintings and photographs by the faculty’s lecturers and students as well as the MotolFest music festival.

Charles University takes first place in 10th Czech Academic Games!

The biggest university sporting event involving individuals, university teams and sports clubs has closed. Between June 5 and 10, 2011, some 2,400 students – 340 them from Charles University – competed at Prague stadiums, indoor arenas and outdoor sports venues. In the overall school ranking, our university placed first out of 43 teams, scoring 340 points.

Summer break and sex: STDs are not worth underestimating

A May study carried out by students at Humboltd University came up with a surprising finding: one in three university students in Berlin would consider sex work to pay for their education. Four percent out of the 3,200 surveyed even admitted to having worked in the sex industry in some way or another. This sort of behaviour greatly increases the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases. That’s why I approached MUDr. Daniela Vaňousová who covered this topic at the May Medical Café Scientifique discussion evening.

Czech Academic Games declared open

Concise and refined. Those are the words describing the opening of the 10th Czech Academic Games which took place on June 6, 2011 in the Bethlehem Chapel. In attendance were Prague mayor doc. MUDr. Bohuslav Svoboda, CSc.; the chairman of the Czech Olympic Committee MUDr. Milan Jirásek; the rectors of Prague universities; many other distinguished guests but above all the athletes. Sport at Czech universities was for now represented by culture – great works of classical music and historic architecture.

This year’s Jan Palach Prize awarded to translation studies graduate

This year’s Jan Palach Prize, bestowed by the College of the Dean of the Charles University Faculty of Arts, has been awarded to Mgr. Anna Rosová, a graduate of the Institute of Translation Studies for her Master’s thesis titled “Inner Emigration of Jan Zábrana and Osip Mandelstam“. The prize was awarded at the April session of the Faculty of Arts Academic Council.

Charles University rowers came in second place

Charles University rowers came in second place in the inaugural University boat race on the river Vltava. On the kilometre long track four Prague universities were competing and the gold medal was won by the eight with cox from Czech technical University in Prague. In third position came the crew of The University of economics, while the crew of Czech University of Life Sciences had to give up the race, because theirs steering wire pulled apart.

Founder of a Groundbreaking Malign Melanoma Treatment Becomes Doctor Honoris Causa at Charles University

On June 2, Professor Patrick Anthony Riley, a world-renowned expert in pigment cell research and malign cancerous skin diseases, received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa in the historical building of Karolinum. The honorary title of the doctor of medicine was handed to him by his long-term Czech colleague and collaborator Professor Jan Borovanský.
