Charles University students take bronze in First International Academic Fire Fighting Games
On May 4, 2011, Ostrava hosted the First International Academic Fire Fighting Games. Organized by the VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava in cooperation with the Association of Firefighters of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia under the auspices of the deputy mayor of Ostrava, the contest took place on the premises of the Fire Rescue Service of the Moravian-Silesian Region in Ostrava-Poruba.

Charles University Rector awards Rector’s Cup to University Marathon winners
Five Rector’s Awards for the Charles University’s best academic publications, textbooks and lecture notes of the year were handed out at today’s session of the Charles University Academic Council. The Charles University Rector also awarded the university’s memorial medals to two outstanding personalities – the immunologist Prof. MUDr. Terezie Fučíková, Dr.Sc., and historian Prof. PhDr. Ivan Hlaváček, CSc.

Charles University Rector awards Rector’s Cup to University Marathon winners
At yesterday’s gala ceremony held by the Prague International Marathon, the Charles University Rector Prof. Václav Hampl awarded the Rector’s Cup to students from the University of Szeged who became the winning team of the University Marathon – the Rector’s Cup Run.

Pink suits gender. A new book looks at gender in the life of literature
One of the latest offerings from the Karolinum publishing house is a book by the translation scholar PhDr. Eva Kalivodová, Ph.D., focusing on the phenomena and issues of translation and gender. The launch of her book “Browningová nebo Klášterský? Krásnohorská nebo Byron? O rodu v životě literatury” [E. Barret-Browning or Klášterský? Krásnohorská or Byron? On Gender in the Life of Literature] took place on May 24 in the cosy environment of the Sweerts-Sporck Palace, home of the Institute of Translation Studies.

The philosophy of sport emphasises the athlete’s humanity
The Charles University Faculty of Physical Education and Sport had the privilege to host the first European conference devoted to the philosophy of sport in Europe. The three-day event organised by the European Association for the Philosophy of Sport (EAPS), will be declared open on May 19 in the Karolinum Small Hall.

Rector’s Sports Day
This year’s Rector’s Sports Day will be held under the auspices of the Institute of Physical Education of the Second and Third Faculties of Medicine. To stay true to our institute’s name, we have included health-themed activities in the programme. We have included lessons of the popular Nordic walking to give you an introduction to walking with poles. Slacklining is another health-minded discipline – not only will it be a lot of fun but you will also get a chance to test your balance.

Charles University takes part in Bookworld 2011
On May 12 – 15, the Industrial Palace at Prague’s Výstaviště exhibition grounds hosted the 17th International Book Fair and Literary Festival Bookworld Prague 2011. The Karolinum publishing house again welcomed visitors at its stand, visible from afar, in the corner of the right wing of the Industrial Palace.

Reforms are worth carrying out, says Prime Minister Petr Nečas after meeting students
Using the “language of numbers” Prime Minister Petr Nečas attempted to convince Charles University students as well as members of the academic community of the necessity to carry out the government-proposed reforms. On Tuesday May 10, the crowded Great Hall of the Faculty of Arts listened with interest to his arguments in favour of a speedy implementation of – above all – the pension reform. The discussion which followed included questions as well as criticism of the current government. The meeting was opened by Charles University Rector, Prof. Václav Hampl, the discussion was chaired by the Dean of the Charles University Faculty of Arts, doc. PhDr. Michal Stehlík, Ph.D.

Courtyard in Celetná Street hosts another “Okultění”
On Friday, April 29, after 2 pm the stage erected in the courtyard surrounded by Charles University buildings came to life again. It became the venue of “Okultění”, an event traditionally organized by the Department of Cultural Studies of the Charles University Faculty of Arts. Besides the usual workshops and tastings, this year’s novelty was a stand of the animal shelter Lary where visitors could bring pet food or agree on a different form of cooperation.
