Every Genocide Leaves a Legacy
USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education has added a collection of testimonies of survivors and rescuers from the 1994 Rwandan Tutsi genocide to its Visual History Archive. This marks the first integration of testimonies other than Holocaust survivors and witnesses into the Visual History Archive. The 65 audiovisual interviews in this new collection mark the beginning of the Rwanda Archive and Education Program, the Institute’s landmark initiative in partnership with Aegis Trust at the Kigali Genocide Memorial (KGM), that aspires to record and preserve approximately 500 Rwandan testimonies as an educational resource for the entire world, forever.

Academic Night at the Faculty of Arts
On the last Thursday of April, an academic night was held at the main Faculty of Arts building in náměstí Jana Palacha. The night aimed to promote awareness of student activism and to raise intellectual debate concerning the Czech government’s proposed educational reforms, and other wider issues that affected Czech universities and students.

Strokeman of university rowing eight says: we’ll thump them
Olympic medallist Mirka Knapková on the CU boat, and two-time Olympian Milan Bruncvík representing Cambridge and not his former alma mater, ČVUT: the make-ups of the crews taking part in the third edition of the University Eights competition, part of the Prague Primátorky (‘Mayor’s Eights’) regatta, brought more than a few surprises. The speed of the CU boat will be dictated this year by Antonín Mařík. We asked the first-year student of physiotherapy at FTVS about their preparations for the race.

Linguistics and geography at CU placed in top 100 of QS ranking
Charles University has confirmed its place amongst the top universities in the world, the only institution in the Czech Republic to do so. The Linguistics and Geography departments were rated in the top 100 in the World University Rankings by Subject, as composed by the British company Quacquarelli Symonds.

Israel Week at Charles University: The Future of Israeli Studies in the Czech Republic
On 9-15 May, the Prague Centre for Jewish Studies is organizing “Israel Week at Charles University: The Future of Israeli Studies in the Czech Republic”. The project’s aim is to identify the main subjects of Israeli studies covered by Czech and foreign scholars while also forging ties between the Czech academic world and Israeli and other international institutions. Israeli studies involves the interdisciplinary study of modern Israeli history, politics, society, culture and art. It also focuses on the study of Jewish communities in the diaspora since creation of the State of Israel. This pilot project should serve as a starting point for potential future research and teaching activities in the field of Israeli studies at Charles University’s Faculty of Arts.

First Student Majáles
The first day in May is not just for celebrating spring and international workers day but also a festivity whereby students rejoice in the beauty of student life. Czech Majáles (Rag) is a long run tradition and is historically a student run event that happens every year at the beginning of May. It enjoys the participation of various student clubs and societies as well as individuals sharing their ideas with fellow students.
