Marie Kalbáčová převzala stipendium Pro ženy ve vědě

On May 13, RNDr. Marie Kalbáčová, Ph.D. from the Institute of Inherited Metabolic Disorders of the Charles University 1st Faculty of Medicine, received the L'Oréal For Women in Science scholarship for her work “Interaction of Cells and Nanomaterials: New Perspectives of Implantology and Bioelectronics”. Ms. Kalbáčová studies the interaction among human cells and various nanomaterials. She focuses on both osteoblasts and primary stem cells, which she grows on materials such as carbon nanotubes, nanocrystalline diamond and others. She examines the rate of their biocompatibility and their osteoinductive (stimulating bone growth) and osteoconductive (supporting later bone growth) potentials, which might enable faster and easier integration of the implant into the bone tissue.

The other recipients of this year's scholarships were doc. Ing. Gabriela Holubová, Ph.D. from the Department of Mathematics at the University of West Bohemia and Mgr. Jana Humpolíčková, Ph.D. from the Jaroslav Heyrovský Department of Physical Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. The 200,000 crown scholarships are a part of the international programme of support for women in science.

2010 marked the fourth time the scholarships were handed out in the Czech Republic. The committee, chaired by prof. RNDr. Helena Illnerová, DrSc., were choosing three projects by women under 35 years of age out of 52 submissions. The For Women In Science project was launched in 1998 by UNESCO and the L'Oréal company.
