Charles University Rector awards Rector’s Cup to University Marathon winners

At yesterday’s gala ceremony held by the Prague International Marathon, the Charles University Rector Prof. Václav Hampl awarded the Rector’s Cup to students from the University of Szeged who became the winning team of the University Marathon – the Rector’s Cup Run.

 “Sport plays an important part in the life of our university. I take my hat off to all the students who took part in this year’s University Marathon. I extend my thanks to all for their performances and enthusiasm,” the Charles University Rector Prof. Václav Hampl said. The Charles University Rector’s Cup Run took place as part of the great marathon weekend on Sunday May 8, 2011. The Hungarian team who called themselves “Naughty Holiday of Szeged” won the student relay race of the University Marathon; the Czech Technical University’s relay team came second and a team from the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport in Prague came third.

The bronze “Srdcaři” team, as the students from the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport called themselves, said the following about their performance: “We joined the race with the intention to win, of course. But we are happy with the third place because, in the end, there was some tough competition. Above all we are happy with the time. We ran faster by some two minutes than we had expected.”

The winning Hungarian relay team finished in 2:35:13, the team from the Open Informatics programme from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering took silver with 2:46:59, and the “Srdcaři” team from the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport (with the overall time of 2:48:02) came third one minute behind them.

Four-member teams of university students aged 18–26 registered for the University Marathon. On V-E Day, 41 teams from many universities from across the Czech Republic and from abroad competed in the race – besides Charles University, other participants came from Palacký University Olomouc, the Technical University of Liberec and Masaryk University in Brno. Thirty-eight teams completed the race.
