The informal festival “Jarmark” (or Fair in English) organized by the Charles University Student Union with the support of Charles University is a regular feature in the calendar of university events. For the first time this year the stands as well as a music stage were situated just outside the Estates Theatre on Prague’s Ovocný trh (or Fruit Market in English). As every year, the festival belonged to students who are interested in the happenings at the university and who wish to participate in its activities.
In the early afternoon on Thursday, October 6th, the centre of Prague resounded with music. The student bands Last Station, Vagyny dy Praga and City of Autumn took turns on the stage in front of the Charles University building to be later succeeded by professional bands Chancers, Notes From Prague, Navigators and Niceland. Throughout the event, students – particularly those just entering their first year – were able to collect information on university events or purchase items with the university logo.
At 4 pm Charles University Rector Václav Hampl paid a visit to the fair in order to greet the representatives of student associations and welcome all participants to the event. He mentioned, among other things, that the Fruit Market had been named after regular fairs held there and therefore moving the student fair to this location was more than symbolic. He also pointed out that the time spent at the university is not only an excellent opportunity to acquire education but also to forge new friendships and contacts.
