CU now offers Computer Science programs in English

Starting from the 2013/14 winter semester, Charles University will offer three-year bachelor’s and two-year master’s programmes in Computer Science. The annual tuition fee will be 3,000 EUR (around 3,900 USD) for students from the EU and 5,000 EUR (around 6,500 USD) for students from outside the EU.

“This is an important moment in the life of our faculty. While we have always offered courses in English, we are now opening a complete undergraduate study programme,” said Jaroslav Nešetřil, one of the most distinguished researchers at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics.

Even undergraduate courses are taught at the faculty by prominent researchers. The quality of the programs is demonstrated by e.g. the BIRD routing server, which originated as a student project and is now used by more than 40% of Internet peering centres worldwide.

The Computer Science programmes are housed in a former Jesuit building, dating from the 17th century, which is, according to the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Jan Kratochvíl, “one of the most beautiful computer science buildings in the world”.

Charles University is one of the most active universities in the Erasmus programme. According to rector Václav Hampl, more than 2,500 students attend English-language courses at the Medical Faculties, Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Sports.

When preparing its new English-language Computer Science programmes, the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics drew on the knowledge and skills gained by the 1st Faculty of Medicine during the twenty years it had run its own English-language courses. According to former dean Tomáš Zima, the Medical Faculty currently has more than 700 students, from every continent.

The quality of the programs at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics is confirmed by the number of graduates moving on to successful careers with companies such as Google, Facebook, IBM, GoodData, Oracle and Avast.
