Faculty of Social Sciences Celebrated Its 20th Anniversary
On October 27th, the whole faculty was celebrating. In the morning, its students met the current and past management of the faculty to remember the days when the faculty’s institutes were being founded. In the afternoon, the programme continued in the Patriot Hall of the Karolinum building, where the Rector of Charles University, Professor Václav Hampl, among others, offered his congratulations.

President Awards Two Charles University Scientists With State Decorations
On the anniversary of the foundation of Czechoslovakia, October 28, 2010, President of the Czech Republic, Professor Václav Klaus, awarded 22 distinguished personalities with state awards. Among the recipients of the Medal of Merit were Professor Jaroslav Nešetřil from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and Professor Milan Šamánek from the 2nd Faculty of Medicine.

Patejdl Cabin Celebrates Its 300th Anniversary
One of the oldest buildings of Charles University, the Patejdl Cabin celebrates the 300th anniversary of its continuous operation. A former logger cabin granted to the university in 1961 by the then Ministry of Education and Information, it has since been used all year long as the site of sports training courses for students of all faculties.

Charles University´s statement concerning the plan of the Ministry of Education
Ministerstvo školství na tiskové konferenci dne 25. října 2010 zveřejnilo informaci, že plánuje zavést počínaje akademickým rokem 2011/2012 na vysokých školách zápisné, které by studenti hradili při zápisu do akademického roku, a to ve výši maximálně 6 000 Kč. Toto zápisné by dle představ MŠMT mělo být zavedeno na dva roky s tím, že poté bude nahrazeno odloženým školným.

1st Medical Faculty’s Addictology Center Introduces Its Master’s Programme
This year, first Master’s degree students enrolled at the Addictology Centre of the Psychiatry Clinic of Charles University’s 1st Faculty of Medicine. It is presently the only institution in the Czech Republic to offer a university degree in addictology. Introducing the centre is its director, doc. PhDr. Michal Miovský, Ph.D.

1st Faculty of Medicine´s Kateřinská Building Opens After Reconstruction
Dean of the faculty, Professor Tomáš Zima, Rector of Charles University, Professor Václav Hampl, and the head of the General Faculty Hospital, Mrs. Dana Jurásková, took part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the 1st Faculty of Medicine building in Kateřinská Street.

Faculty of Humanities Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary
Two of the greatest works ever written in the genre of string quartet, the String Quartet No. 2 in G major, and the String Quartet No. 16 in F major by Ludwig van Beethoven, performed by the Wihan Quartet, set the mood for the celebration of the 10th anniversary of Charles University’s youngest faculty – the Faculty of Humanities.

The Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen Celebrated Its 65th Anniversary
Memories, optimism about recent successes, and concerns about the future of the plans for the construction of the faculty’s campus all resounded throughout the celebrations of the 65th anniversary of the foundation of the Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen. Among those came to wish it the best were representatives of Charles University and other Czech and Slovak institutions of higher education, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Health, and the city of Pilsen.

Institute of Economic Studies Presented Charles University’s Programmes at the Shanghai EXPO
Institut ekonomických studií Fakulty sociálních věd Univerzity Karlovy prožil v Šanghaji v českém pavilónu EXPO skvělý první zářijový týden. Představil evropským a především čínským prestižním univerzitám a jejich studentům své studijní programy a navíc ve spolupráci s partnerskou Fudan University uspořádal pozoruhodný workshop na téma Evropská unie a Čína v turbulentní době. Doba je v mnoha ohledech skutečně dramatická, jak v následujícím rozhovoru naznačují Prof. Michal Mejstřík, ředitel Institutu ekonomických studií Fakulty sociálních věd Univerzity Karlovy, a PhDr. Martin Gregor, PhD., zástupce ředitele IES FSV UK. Přesto nacházejí i v turbulencích dneška prostor pro uvažování o jedinečnosti ekonomie a jejího nezastupitelného místa při formování pohledu na dny a činy budoucí.
